Enjoy Sunset on the Grand Marais Harbor

The perfect end to an eventful summer day is ice cream (or a frozen custard) and a stroll around the Grand Marais harbor, maybe even a trek down to the lighthouse. Stop in at one of the many shops around town to grab some camping gear, look at fine art or pick up a souvenir.

Explore the Forest

Did you know that the majority of the land in this region is publicly owned? From the Superior National Forest to State Parks and National Monuments there is so much to do and see in the great outdoors. The Superior Hiking Trail runs along the shore of Lake Superior and offers an abundance of beautiful hikes to explore the lake shore up close or from above. Our favorite time of year to get out in the woods is fall and always with our favorite hiking companions, Porter and Rufus.

Set Sail on the Big Lake

There's nothing quite like experiencing Lake Superior from the water. In the summer months, North House Folk School offers daily sails on the Hjordis, their 50-foot sailboat. Sailing trips last a few hours, but fill up quickly. We suggest booking your ride in advance.

Find a Waterfall

The North Shore has an amazing number of waterfalls, formed as the rivers make their descent into Lake Superior. Grad a map and picnic lunch, get out and enjoy the sights and sounds of area falls. If the weather is warm enough you might even want to take a dip! In the summer, check out the Kadunce River and Onion River for a beautiful river hike.

Learn a new skill

Whether you want to be working in ceramics, photography or blowing glass, Grand Marais has an option for you. Just a few blocks away, Grand Marais Art Colony has several options for continuing, hands on learning.

Embrace traditional crafts

Working with your hands in this modern world is often an afterthought. Create an item and a memory to have for years. Woodturning, blacksmithing, basketry or boat building, North House Folk School has something for everyone with classes held year round.

Espresso on the Harbor

A short walk down the hill is Java Moose, our fabulous local coffee shop. Start your morning with a warm beverage, friendly faces and a stroll along the beautiful harbor.

Fishin’ for downtime

Unwinding from the stresses of daily life can be done with simple joys, a rod and a reel can catch smiles also. Spend time connecting with loved ones, but be careful not to fall in!

Cycling, its not just for roads anymore.

Nearby the Pincushion Mountain Trailhead has a variety of single track trails, covering some awesome terrain. A great way to get out in nature year round.

The Gitchi-Gami Bike tail running from Two Harbors to Grand Marais is a great way to enjoy the big lake, and a more casual ride.

From our parking lot, the trail is only three blocks away, with e-bike rentals in town, it is perfect for any ability level.
